~Fifth Commandment
Question 104. What does God require in the fifth Commandment?
Answer. That I show all honor, love, and faithfulness to my father and mother,[1] and to all in authority over me,[2] submit myself with due obedience to all their good instruction and correction, and also bear patiently with their infirmities, since it is God’s will to govern us by their hand.[3]

I have glorified thee on the earth
Daily Light Devotions - May 4 - Evening
I have glorified thee on the earth.
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 1
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 2
We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 3
And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 4
But when Jesus heard it he said, "This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?" 5
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. 6
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." 7
And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" 8
And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth." 9

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened
Daily Light Devotions - May 4 - Morning
Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened ...
Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 1
On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased. 2
while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice. 3
Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 4
But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! 5
'Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. 6
He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 7
And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" 8

~Fourth Commandment
Question 103. What does God require in the fourth Commandment?
Answer. In the first place, God wills that the ministry of the Gospel and schools be maintained,[1] and that I, especially on the day of rest, diligently attend church[2] to learn the Word of God,[3] to use the Holy Sacraments,[4] to call publicly upon the Lord,[5] and to give Christian alms.[6] In the second place, that all the days of my life I rest from my evil works, allow the Lord to work in me by His Spirit, and thus begin in this life the everlasting Sabbath.[7]

Perfecting holiness in the fear of God
Daily Light Devotions - May 3 - Evening
Perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. 1
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 2
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 3
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 4
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 5
And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 6
He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 7
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 8

Be ye perfect ...
You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. 1
When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2
You shall be holy to me, for I the LORD am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine. 3
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 4
and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 5
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 6
Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 7
Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! 8
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 9
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! 10

May we swear by “the saints” or by any other creatures?

Question 102. May we swear by “the saints” or by any other creatures?
Answer. No, for a lawful oath is a calling upon God, that He, as the only searcher of hearts, may bear witness to the truth, and punish me if I swear falsely;[1] which honor is due to no creature.[2]

Keep yourselves from idols
Daily Light Devotions - May 2 - Evening
Keep yourselves from idols.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. 1
My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. 2
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3
"Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and set the stumbling block of their iniquity before their faces. Should I indeed let myself be consulted by them? 4
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 5
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 6
Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them. 7
My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver. 8
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 9
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." 10

Surely the Lord is in this place ...
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." 1
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." 2
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." 3
And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." 4
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 5
"Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. 6
"But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! 7
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. 8

Heidelberg Catechism
Question 101. But may we swear reverently by the name of God?
Answer. Yes, when the magistrate requires it, or when it may be needful otherwise, to maintain and promote fidelity and truth to the glory of God and our neighbor’s good; for such an oath is grounded in God’s Word,[1] and therefore was rightly used by the saints in the Old and New Testaments.[2]

The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The LORD Is There." 1
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 2
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. 3
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 4
But Judah shall be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem to all generations. I will avenge their blood, blood I have not avenged, for the LORD dwells in Zion." 5
Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. 6
No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 7

The fruit of the Spirit is ... peace
Daily Light Devotions - May 1 - Morning
The fruit of the Spirit is ... peace.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 1
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 2
But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace. 3
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 4
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. 5
which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. 6
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 7
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. 8
but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster." 9
Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. 10
