God shall wipe away all tears

Daily Light Devotions - May 15 - Morning

God shall wipe away all tears ...

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." 1

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 2

Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. 3

And no inhabitant will say, "I am sick"; the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity. 4

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. 5

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. 6

Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from Death? O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion is hidden from my eyes. 7

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." 8

as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 9

Can those who are converted to God keep these Commandments perfectly?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 114.
Can those who are converted to God keep these Commandments perfectly?

Answer. No, but even the holiest men, while in this life, have only a small beginning of such obedience,[1] yet so that with earnest purpose they begin to live not only according to some, but according to all the Commandments of God.[2]

They overcame ... by the blood of the Lamb

Daily Light Devotions - May 14 - Evening

They overcame ... by the blood of the Lamb.

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 1

Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died--more than that, who was raised--who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 2

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. 3

For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. 4

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 5

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 6

and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7

The fellowship of His sufferings

Daily Light Devotions - May 14 - Morning

The fellowship of His sufferings.

that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 1

It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 2

He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 3

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." 4

If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 5

Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. 6

At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 7

And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." 8

For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 9

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 10

What does the tenth Commandment require?

Heidelberg Catechism

~Tenth Commandment

Question 113. What does the tenth Commandment require?

Answer. That not even the least inclination or thought against any commandment of God ever enter our heart, but that with our whole heart we continually hate all sin and take pleasure in all righteousness.[1]

My heart panteth, my strength faileth me

Daily Light Devotions - May 13 - Evening

My heart panteth, my strength faileth me.

My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes--it also has gone from me. 1

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. Of David. Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, 2

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 3

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" 4

If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. 5

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 6

The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy before you and said, Destroy. 7

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 8

Pray every where, lifting up holy hands

Daily Light Devotions - May 13 - Morning

Pray every where, lifting up holy hands ...

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 1

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 2

Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 3

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." 4

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 5

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 6

If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. 7

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 8

What does the ninth Commandment require?

Heidelberg Catechism

~Ninth Commandment

Question 112. What does the ninth Commandment require?

Answer. That I bear false witness against no one,[1] twist no one’s words,[2] be no backbiter or slanderer,[3] join in condemning no one unheard or rashly;[4] but that on pain of God’s heavy wrath, I avoid all lying and deceit[5] as the very works of the devil;[6] and that in matters of judgment and justice and in all other affairs, I love, speak honestly, and confess the truth;[7] also, insofar as I can, defend and promote my neighbor’s good name.[8]

Reproach hath broken my heart

Daily Light Devotions - May 12 - Evening

Reproach hath broken my heart.

Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. 1

Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 2

Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 3

The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" 4

But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." 5

So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner." 6

And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." 7

And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 8

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds." 9

It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 10

For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 11

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 12

Beloved, let us love one another

Daily Light Devotions - May 12 - Morning

Beloved, let us love one another ...

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 1

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 2

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 3

Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 4

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 5

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 6

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 7

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 8

But what does God require of you in this Commandment?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 111.
But what does God require of you in this Commandment?

Answer. That I further my neighbor’s good where I can and may, deal with him as I would have others deal with me,[1] and labor faithfully, so that I may be able to help the poor in their need.[2]

My sheep hear my voice

Daily Light Devotions - May 11 - Evening

My sheep hear my voice.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 1

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 2

I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking. "Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night." I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. 3

And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant hears." 4

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 5

Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. 6
