Second causes not to be regarded

"It is impossible to be submissive and religiously patient, if ye stay your thoughts down among the confused rollings and wheels of second causes; as, “Oh the place!” “Oh the time!” “Oh if this had been, this had not followed!” Oh the linking of this accident with this time and place! Look up to the master-motion and the first wheel." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 2007, 18. [Letter CCXCIX, 15 Oct. 1640]

The unity of the Spirit

Daily Light Devotions - July 31 - Evening

The unity of the Spirit.

eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call-- 1

For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. 2

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 4

Rejection of the Errors:

by Which the Dutch Churches Have for Some Time Been Disturbed Having set forth the orthodox teaching concerning election and reprobation, the Synod rejects the errors of those

II. Who teach that God’s election to eternal life is of many kinds: one general and indefinite, the other particular and definite; and the latter in turn either incomplete, revocable, nonperemptory (or conditional), or else complete, irrevocable, and peremptory (or absolute). Likewise, who teach that there is one election to faith and another to salvation, so that there can be an election to justifying faith apart from a peremptory election to salvation. For this is an invention of the human brain, devised apart from the Scriptures, which distorts the teaching concerning election and breaks up this golden chain of salvation: Those whom he predestined, he also called; and those whom he called, he also justified; and those whom he justified, he also glorified (Rom. 8:30).

Endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus

Daily Light Devotions - July 31 - Morning

Endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus ...

Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 1

Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 2

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 3

strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. 4

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 5

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 7

Out of whatever direction the wind blow, it will blow us on our Lord

"Out of whatever airt (direction) the wind blow, it will blow us on our Lord: no wind can blow our sails overboard, because Christ’s skill and honour of his wisdom, are empawned and laid down at the stake for the sea-passengers, that he shall put them safe off his hand on the shore, in his Father’s known bounds, our native home ground." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Nicodemus ... he that came to Jesus by night

Daily Light Devotions - July 30 - Evening

Nicodemus ... he that came to Jesus by night.

Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 1

And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. 2

Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. 3

The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe. 4

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 5

a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 6

He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." 7

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 8

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 9

So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 10

Rejection of the Errors:

by Which the Dutch Churches Have for Some Time Been Disturbed Having set forth the orthodox teaching concerning election and reprobation, the Synod rejects the errors of those

I. Who teach that the will of God to save those who would believe and persevere in faith and in the obedience of faith is the whole and entire decision of election to salvation, and that nothing else concerning this decision has been revealed in God’s Word. For they deceive the simple and plainly contradict Holy Scripture in its testimony that God does not only wish to save those who would believe, but that he has also from eternity chosen certain particular people to whom, rather than to others, he would within time grant faith in Christ and perseverance. As Scripture says, I have revealed your name to those whom you gave me (John 17:6). Likewise, All who were appointed for eternal life believed (Acts 13:48), and He chose us before the foundation of the world so that we should be holy… (Eph. 1:4).

Seek those things which are above

Daily Light Devotions - July 30 - Morning

Seek those things which are above ...

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 1

Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. 2

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 3

The deep says, 'It is not in me,' and the sea says, 'It is not with me.' 4

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 5

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 6

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved-- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7

For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 8

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the LORD. 9

The Mediator

Here's a prayer titled "The Mediator" from "The Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions" edited by Arthur Bennett (pages 72-73):

EVERLASTING CREATOR-FATHER

I have destroyed myself,
     my nature is defiled,
     the powers of my soul are degraded;
     I am vile, miserable, strengthless,
but my hope is in thee.
If ever I am saved it will be by goodness
     undeserved and astonishing,
not by mercy alone but by abundant mercy,
   not by grace but by exceeding riches of grace;
And such thou hast revealed, promised, exemplified
in thoughts of peace, not of evil.

Thou hast devised means
to rescue me from sin’s perdition,
to restore me to happiness, honour, safety.
I bless thee for the everlasting covenant,
for the appointment of a Mediator.
I rejoice that he failed not, nor was discouraged,
but accomplished the work thou gavest him
     to do;
and said on the cross, 'It is finished.'
I exult in the thought that
   thy justice is satisfied,
   thy truth established,
   thy law magnified,
and a foundation is laid for my hope.
I look to a present and personal interest
     in Christ and say,
Surely he has borne my griefs,
   carried my sorrows,
   won my peace,
   healed my soul.
Justified by his blood I am saved by his life,
Glorying in his cross I bow to his sceptre,
Having his Spirit I possess his mind.

Lord, grant that my religion may not be
   occasional and partial,
   but universal, influential, effective,
and may I always continue in thy words
     as well as thy works,
so that I may reach my end in peace.

Be patient .. all things shall be righted

"Be patient; Christ went to heaven with many a wrong. His visage and countenance was all marred more than the sons of men. You may not be above your Master; many a black stroke received innocent Jesus, and he received no mends, but referred them all to the great court-day, when all things shall be righted." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 2007, 17. [Letter XIV, 7 May 1631]

Thou hast given me the heritage

Daily Light Devotions - July 29 - Evening

Thou hast given me the heritage ...

For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. 1

no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD." 2

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 3

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 4

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. 5

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 6

The Proper Attitude Toward Election and Reprobation

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 18: The Proper Attitude Toward Election and Reprobation

To those who complain about this grace of an undeserved election and about the severity of a just reprobation, we reply with the words of the apostle, Who are you, O man, to talk back to God? (Rom. 9:20), and with the words of our Savior, Have I no right to do what I want with my own? (Matt. 20:15). We, however, with reverent adoration of these secret things, cry out with the apostle: Oh, the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways beyond tracing out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Or who has first given to God, that God should repay him? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen (Rom. 11:33-36).

Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens

Daily Light Devotions - July 29 - Morning

Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens ...

We have become like those over whom you have never ruled, like those who are not called by your name. Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence-- 1

Make haste, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices. 2

And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 3

Bow your heavens, O LORD, and come down! Touch the mountains so that they smoke! 4

and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." 5

so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. 6

It will be said on that day, "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation." 7

He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! 8

waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 9

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 10

Christ is our eternal feast

"Our fair morning is at hand, the day-star is near the rising, and we are not many miles from home; what matters ill entertainment in the smoky inns of this miserable life? We are not to stay here, and we will be dearly welcome to him whom we go to." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Let your requests be made known unto God

Daily Light Devotions - July 28 - Evening

Let your requests be made known unto God.

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 1

And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 2

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 3

I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. 4

After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. And she vowed a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head." They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 5

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 6

He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah 7

The Salvation of the Infants of Believers

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 17: The Salvation of the Infants of Believers

Since we must make judgments about God’s will from his Word, which testifies that the children of believers are holy, not by nature but by virtue of the gracious covenant in which they together with their parents are included, godly parents ought not to doubt the election and salvation of their children whom God calls out of this life in infancy.

Walk in love

Daily Light Devotions - July 28 - Morning

Walk in love.

And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 1

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 2

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 3

Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. 4

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." 5

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 6

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, 7

Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 8

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 9

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 10

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 11

Responses to the Teaching of Reprobation

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 16: Responses to the Teaching of Reprobation

Those who do not yet actively experience within themselves a living faith in Christ or an assured confidence of heart, peace of conscience, a zeal for childlike obedience, and a glorying in God through Christ, but who nevertheless use the means by which God has promised to work these things in us–such people ought not to be alarmed at the mention of reprobation, nor to count themselves among the reprobate; rather they ought to continue diligently in the use of the means, to desire fervently a time of more abundant grace, and to wait for it in reverence and humility. On the other hand, those who seriously desire to turn to God, to be pleasing to him alone, and to be delivered from the body of death, but are not yet able to make such progress along the way of godliness and faith as they would like–such people ought much less to stand in fear of the teaching concerning reprobation, since our merciful God has promised that he will not snuff out a smoldering wick and that he will not break a bruised reed. However, those who have forgotten God and their Savior Jesus Christ and have abandoned themselves wholly to the cares of the world and the pleasures of the flesh–such people have every reason to stand in fear of this teaching, as long as they do not seriously turn to God.

... if we have Christ

"Neither need we fear crosses, or sigh, or be sad for anything that is on this side of heaven, if we have Christ" -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. Give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness

Daily Light Devotions - July 26 - Evening

Give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! 1

Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! 2

Behold, even the moon is not bright, and the stars are not pure in his eyes; how much less man, who is a maggot, and the son of man, who is a worm!" 3

"Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 4

And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!" 5

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." 6

For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 7

If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. 8

Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 9

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 10

Moreover, Holy Scripture most especially highlights this eternal and undeserved grace of our election and brings it out more clearly for us, in that it further bears witness that not all people have been chosen but that some have not been chosen or have been passed by in God’s eternal election– those, that is, concerning whom God, on the basis of his entirely free, most just, irreproachable, and unchangeable good pleasure, made the following decision: to leave them in the common misery into which, by their own fault, they have plunged themselves; not to grant them saving faith and the grace of conversion; but finally to condemn and eternally punish them (having been left in their own ways and under his just judgment), not only for their unbelief but also for all their other sins, in order to display his justice.

And this is the decision of reprobation, which does not at all make God the author of sin (a blasphemous thought!) but rather its fearful, irreproachable, just judge and avenger.

By faith Abraham ... obeyed

Daily Light Devotions - July 26 - Morning

By faith Abraham ... obeyed.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 1

He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah 2

"He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the LORD alone guided him, no foreign god was with him. 3

Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. 4

Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? 5

for we walk by faith, not by sight. 6

For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 7

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 8

Arise and go, for this is no place to rest, because of uncleanness that destroys with a grievous destruction. 9

I urge upon you ... a nearer communion with Christ and a growing communion

"I urge upon you ... nearer communion with Christ and a growing communion. There are curtains to be drawn by in Christ that we never saw, and new foldings of love in him. I despair that ever I shall win to the far end of that love, there are so many plies in it; therefore dig deep; and sweat, and labour, and take pains for him; and set by so much time in the day for him as you can: he will be won with labour." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 2007, 16. [Letter  CIV, 7 March 1637]

Thou wilt shew me the path of life

Daily Light Devotions - July 25 - Evening

Thou wilt shew me the path of life.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. 1

"And to this people you shall say: 'Thus says the LORD: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 2

Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 3

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 4

And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." 5

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. 6

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 7

And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. 8

Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth." 9

In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 10

Teaching Election Properly

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 14: Teaching Election Properly

Just as, by God’s wise plan, this teaching concerning divine election has been proclaimed through the prophets, Christ himself, and the apostles, in Old and New Testament times, and has subsequently been committed to writing in the Holy Scriptures, so also today in God’s church, for which it was specifically intended, this teaching must be set forth–with a spirit of discretion, in a godly and holy manner, at the appropriate time and place, without inquisitive searching into the ways of the Most High. This must be done for the glory of God’s most holy name, and for the lively comfort of his people.

We know that we have passed from death unto life

Daily Light Devotions - July 25 -  Morning

We know that we have passed from death unto life.

We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 1

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 2

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 3

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 4

By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 5

We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 6

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved-- 7

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 8

It must be so till we be up in our Father’s house

"It is little up or little down that the Lamb and His followers can get no law-surety (one responsible in law, hence, an exemption) nor truce with crosses; it must be so till we be up in our Father’s house." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. He staggered not at the promise of God

Daily Light Devotions - July 24 - Evening

He staggered not at the promise of God ...

No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 1

And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 2

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 3

fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 4

Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son." 5

But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 6

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" 7

The Fruit of This Assurance

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 13: The Fruit of This Assurance

In their awareness and assurance of this election God’s children daily find greater cause to humble themselves before God, to adore the fathomless depth of his mercies, to cleanse themselves, and to give fervent love in return to him who first so greatly loved them. This is far from saying that this teaching concerning election, and reflection upon it, make God’s children lax in observing his commandments or carnally self-assured. By God’s just judgment this does usually happen to those who casually take for granted the grace of election or engage in idle and brazen talk about it but are unwilling to walk in the ways of the chosen.

Patient in tribulation

Daily Light Devotions - July 24 - Morning

Patient in tribulation.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 1

So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him." 2

Though I am in the right, I cannot answer him; I must appeal for mercy to my accuser. 3

And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." 4

But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. 5

Jesus wept. 6

He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 7

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 8

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 9

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." 10

I think it the Lord’s wise love that feeds us with hunger

"When I look over beyond the line and beyond death, to the laughing side of the world, I triumph, and ride upon the high places of Jacob: howbeit otherwise I am a faint, dead-hearted, cowardly man, oft borne down and hungry in waiting for the marriage supper of the Lamb. Nevertheless, I think it the Lord’s wise love that feeds us with hunger, and makes us fat with wants and desertions." - Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. Brothers, pray for us

Daily Light Devotions - July 23 - Evening

Brethren, pray for us.

Brothers, pray for us. 1

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 2

praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 3

For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 4

Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. 5

The Assurance of Election

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 12: The Assurance of Election

Assurance of this their eternal and unchangeable election to salvation is given to the chosen in due time, though by various stages and in differing measure. Such assurance comes not by inquisitive searching into the hidden and deep things of God, but by noticing within themselves, with spiritual joy and holy delight, the unmistakable fruits of election pointed out in God’s Word– such as a true faith in Christ, a childlike fear of God, a godly sorrow for their sins, a hunger and thirst for righteousness, and so on.

Then cometh the end

Daily Light Devotions - July 23 - Morning

Then cometh the end.

Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 1

"But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." 2

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 3

You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 4

He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! 5

Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 6

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 7

"Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 8

God and Myself

Here's a prayer titled "God and Myself" from "The Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions" edited by Arthur Bennett (pages 70-71):

LORD GOD ALMIGHTY,

Thy understanding is unsearchable and infinite,
Thy arm cannot be stayed,
Thy agency extends through limitless space,
All works hang on thy care,
With thee time is a present now.

Holy is thy wisdom, power, mercy, ways, works.
How can I stand before thee
with my numberless and aggravated offences?
I have often loved darkness,
   observed lying vanities,
   forsaken thy given mercies,
   trampled underfoot thy beloved Son,
   mocked thy providences,
   flattered thee with my lips,
   broken thy covenant.
It is of thy compassion that I am not consumed.
Lead me to repentance, and save me from despair;
Let me come to thee renouncing, condemning,
     loathing myself,
but hoping in the grace that flows
even to the chief of sinners.
At the cross may I contemplate the evil of sin,
     and abhor it,
look on him whom I pierced,
as one slain for me, and by me.
May I never despise his death by fearing
     its efficacy for my salvation.
And whatever cross I am required to bear,
let me see him carrying a heavier.
Teach me in health to think of sickness,
   in the brightest hours to be ready for darkness;
in life prepare me for death.
Thus may my soul rest in thee, O immortal
     and transcendent one,
revealed as thou art in the Person and work
     of thy Son,
   the Friend of sinners.

Love of Christ

"There are infinite plies in His love that the saints will never win to unfold." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 2007, 15. [Letter CLII, 14 March 1637]

Keep yourselves in the love of God

Daily Light Devotions - July 22 - Evening

Keep yourselves in the love of God.

keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 1

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 2

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 3

By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 4

but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 5

"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 6

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 7

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 8

Election Unchangeable

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 11: Election Unchangeable

Just as God himself is most wise, unchangeable, all knowing, and almighty, so the election made by him can neither be suspended nor altered, revoked, or annulled; neither can his chosen ones be cast off, nor their number reduced.

... In that he liveth, he liveth unto God

Daily Light Devotions - July 22 - Morning

... In that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 1

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. 2

so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. 3

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 4

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 5

but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 6

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 7

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 8

Christ the exclusive object of love

"Blessed were we if we could make ourselves masters of that invaluable treasure, the love of Christ; or rather suffer ourselves to be mastered and subdued to Christ's love, so as Christ were our all things, and all other things our nothings, and the refuse of our delights. O, let us be ready for shipping against the time our Lord's wind and tide call for us." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The veil of the temple was rent in twain ...

Daily Light Devotions - July 21 - Evening

The veil of the temple was rent in twain ...

And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 1

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 2

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 3

by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 4

Election Based on God’s Good Pleasure

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 10: Election Based on God’s Good Pleasure

But the cause of this undeserved election is exclusively the good pleasure of God. This does not involve his choosing certain human qualities or actions from among all those possible as a condition of salvation, but rather involves his adopting certain particular persons from among the common mass of sinners as his own possession. As Scripture says, When the children were not yet born, and had done nothing either good or bad…, she (Rebecca) was told, “The older will serve the younger.” As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated” (Rom. 9:11-13). Also, All who were appointed for eternal life believed (Acts 13:48).

What profit is there of circumcision?

Daily Light Devotions - July 21 - Morning

What profit is there of circumcision?

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 1

Circumcise yourselves to the LORD; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds." 2

so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies--if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 3

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 4

In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 5

to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 6

He that is of a merry heart hath a ... feast

Daily Light Devotions - July 20 - Evening

He that is of a merry heart hath a ... feast.

All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast. 1

Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." 2

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 3

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 5

Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. 6

as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 7

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 8

Election Not Based on Foreseen Faith

The Canons of Dordrecht

Article 9: Election Not Based on Foreseen Faith

This same election took place, not on the basis of foreseen faith, of the obedience of faith, of holiness, or of any other good quality and disposition, as though it were based on a prerequisite cause or condition in the person to be chosen, but rather for the purpose of faith, of the obedience of faith, of holiness, and so on. Accordingly, election is the source of each of the benefits of salvation. Faith, holiness, and the other saving gifts, and at last eternal life itself, flow forth from election as its fruits and effects. As the apostle says, He chose us (not because we were, but) so that we should be holy and blameless before him in love (Eph. 1:4).

They are not of the world

Daily Light Devotions - July 20 - Morning

They are not of the world ...

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 1

He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 2

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." 3

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 4

that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 5

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 6

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. 7

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 8

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 9

Prayer for one another

"My dear brother, I will think it comfort if ye speak my name to our Well-Beloved wherever ye are. I am mindful of you." -- Rutherford, Samuel, and Ellen S. Lister. The Loveliness of Christ: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 2007, 14.

The dew of Hermon

Daily Light Devotions - July 19 - Evening

The dew of Hermon.

It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. 1

from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion (that is, Hermon), 2

It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. 3

I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon; 4

May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb. 5

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 6

For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 7

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 8

It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 9
