The written Word of God

The Belgic Confession of Faith

Article 3: The written Word of God

We confess that this Word of God was not sent nor delivered by the will of man, but that holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, as the Apostle Peter says (2 Pet. 1:21); and that afterwards God, from a special care which He has for us and our salvation, commanded His servants, the prophets and apostles, to commit His revealed word to
writing; and He Himself wrote with His own finger the two tables of the law. Therefore we call such writings holy and divine Scriptures.

Emmanuel, ... God with us

Daily Light Devotions - June 1 - Evening

Emmanuel, ... God with us.

"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us). 1

"But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built! 2

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 3

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. 4

but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 5

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7

The fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering

Daily Light Devotions - June 1 - Morning

The fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 1

The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 2

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 3

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 4

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 6

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 7

By what means God is made known unto us

The Belgic Confession of Faith

Article 2: By what means God is made known unto us

We know Him by two means: First, by the creation, preservation, and government of the universe; which is before our eyes as a most elegant book, wherein all creatures, great and small, are as so many characters leading us to see clearly His invisible attributes, even His eternal power and Godhead, as the Apostle Paul says (Rom. 1:20). All which things are sufficient to convince men and leave them without excuse. Second, He makes Himself more clearly and fully known to us by His holy and divine Word, that is to say, as far as is necessary for us to know in this life, to His glory and our salvation.

Little children, abide in him

Daily Light Devotions - May 31 - Evening

Little children, abide in him.

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 1

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 2

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 3

You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 4

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 5

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 6

Thy name shall be called Israel

Daily Light Devotions - May 31 - Morning

Thy name shall be called Israel.

Then he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." 1

In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he strove with God. He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us-- 2

No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 3

And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 4

And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes." 5

And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." 6

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" 7

There is only one God

The Belgic Confession of Faith

Article 1: There is Only One God

We all believe with the heart and confess with the mouth that there is one only simple and spiritual Being, which we call God; and that He is eternal, incomprehensible, invisible, immutable, infinite, almighty, perfectly wise, just, good, and the overflowing fountain of all good.

Thou hearest me always

Daily Light Devotions - May 30 - Evening

Thou hearest me always.

I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me." 1

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 2

Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." 3

Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'" 4

saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." 5

By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 6

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 7

and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 8

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 9

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 10

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 11

Let us labour to enter into that rest

Daily Light Devotions - May 30 - Morning

Let us labour to enter into that rest.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 1

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 2

From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 3

Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal." 4

Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 5

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 6

for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 7

The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 8

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 129.
What is the meaning of the word “Amen?”

Answer. “Amen” means: so shall it truly and surely be. For my prayer is much more certainly heard of God than I feel in my heart that I desire these things of Him.[1]

And I say, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; 1

The life of the flesh is in the blood

Daily Light Devotions - May 29 - Morning

The life of the flesh is in the blood ...

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. 1

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 2

I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 3

but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 4

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 5

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 6

he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 7

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 8

for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 9

How do you close this prayer?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 128.
How do you close this prayer?

Answer. “For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever;” that is, all this we ask of You, because as our King, having power over all things, You are willing and able to give us all good;[1] and that thereby not we, but Your holy name may be glorified for ever.[2]

So run, that ye may obtain

Daily Light Devotions - May 28 - Evening

So run, that ye may obtain.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 1

The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!" 2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. 4

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 5

So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 6

and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. 7

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 8

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 9

We look for the Saviour

Daily Light Devotions - May 28 - Morning

We look for the Saviour.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 1

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 2

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 3

so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. 4

It will be said on that day, "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation." 5

I would have you without carefulness

Daily Light Devotions - May 27 - Evening

I would have you without carefulness.

I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 1

casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 2

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars." 3

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 4

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 5

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 6

The LORD is good, a strong hold

The LORD is good, a strong hold ...

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. 1

The city had no need of the sun

Daily Light Devotions - May 26 - Evening

The city had no need of the sun ...

And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 1

At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, that shone around me and those who journeyed with me. And I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 2

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3

The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. 4

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 5

Our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd

Daily Light Devotions - May 26 - Morning

Our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd ...

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 1

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 2

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 3

A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 5

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 6

I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice. 7

For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 8

How great is thy goodness

Daily Light Devotions - May 25 - Morning

How great is thy goodness ...

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! 1

From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him. 2

But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"-- these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 3

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. 4

How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. 5

What is the third petition?

Answer. “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven;” that is, grant that we and all men renounce our own will,[1] and without gainsaying obey Your will, which alone is good;[2] so that every one may fulfill his office and calling as willingly and faithfully [3] as the angels do in heaven.[4]

Daily Light Devotions - May 24 - Evening

I will go and return to my place ...

I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me. 1

but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. 2

I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. 3

Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry, I struck him; I hid my face and was angry, but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart. I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, 4

Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the LORD your God, when he led you in the way? 5

And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 6

Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God

Daily Light Devotions - May 24 - Morning

Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God ...

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 1

I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, 2

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 3

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them. 4

By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 5

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. 6

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 7

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 8

devices formed against Your Holy Word,[3] until the fullness of Your kingdom come,[4] wherein You shall be all in all.[5]

On that night could not the king sleep

On that night could not the king sleep.

On that night the king could not sleep. And he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. 1

Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? 3

all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, "What have you done?" 4

Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. 5

Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt. 6

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars." 7

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 8

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 4

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you

Daily Light Devotions - May 22 - Morning

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 1

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." 7

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. 8

My brethren, be strong in the Lord

Daily Light Devotions - May 21 - Morning

My brethren, be strong in the Lord ...

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 1

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2

Why did Christ command us to address God thus: “Our Father?”

Answer. To awaken in us at the very beginning of our prayer that childlike reverence for and trust in God, which are to be the ground of our prayer, namely, that God has become our Father through Christ, and will much less deny us what we ask of Him in faith than our parents refuse us earthly things.[1]

In the style of the ephod you shall make it--of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen shall you make it. You shall set in it four rows of stones. A row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle shall be the first row; There shall be twelve stones with their names according to the names of the sons of Israel. They shall be like signets, each engraved with its name, for the twelve tribes. Take heed unto thyself.

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. Fellowship in the gospel.

because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 1

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 2

God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 3

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 4

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 5

Let us not be desirous of vain glory

Daily Light Devotions - May 18 - Evening

Let us not be desirous of vain glory.

Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. 1

And Gideon said to them, "Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil." (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, "We will willingly give them." And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. 2

And do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not, for behold, I am bringing disaster upon all flesh, declares the LORD. But I will give you your life as a prize of war in all places to which you may go." 3

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 4

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 3

Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 4

For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 5

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 6

by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 7

Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 8

And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 9

which he will display at the proper time--he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. 10

To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 11

What belongs to such prayer which is acceptable to God and which He will hear?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 117.
What belongs to such prayer which is acceptable to God and which He will hear?

Answer. First, that with our whole heart[1] we call only upon the one true God, who has revealed Himself to us in His Word,[2] for all that He has commanded us to ask of Him;[3]
second, that we thoroughly know our need and misery,[4] so as to humble ourselves in the presence of His divine majesty;[5] third, that we be firmly assured[6] that notwithstanding our unworthiness He will, for the sake of Christ our Lord, certainly hear our prayer,[7] as He has promised us in His Word.[8]

I have exalted one chosen out of the people

Daily Light Devotions - May 17 - Evening

I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said: "I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 1

For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 2

And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. 3

No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 4

See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 5

but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 6

Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. 7

I am the Lord your God

Daily Light Devotions - May 17 - Morning

I am the Lord your God ...

I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, 1

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 2

whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. 3

For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 4

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 5

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 6

Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. 7

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 8

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 9

O God we trust in you; help us to trust you more

Below are words to the song "God Moves" from an album titled "Worship God Live." William Cowper (26 November 1731 – 25 April 1800) wrote most of the words (see the poem Light Shinging Out of Darkness), and Bob Kauflin wrote the music and additional words. God is infinitely great and good, even in and through the bad things that happen to us and in the world. "Blind unbelief is sure to err and scan [God's] work in vain; God is His own interpreter, and (if not now, certainly in eternity) He will make it plain."

God Moves

Verse 1
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm
Deep in His dark and hidden mines
With never-failing skill
He fashions all His bright designs
And works His sovereign will

Chorus I
So God we trust in You
O God we trust in You

Verse 2
O fearful saints new courage take
The clouds that you now dread
Are big with mercy and will break
In blessings on your head
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust Him for His grace
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face

Chorus II
So God we trust in You
O God we trust in You
When tears are great
And comforts few
We hope in mercies ever new
We trust in You

Verse 3
God’s purposes will ripen fast
Unfolding every hour
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower
Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain
God is His own interpreter
And He will make it plain

To live is Christ, and to die is gain

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21)

Below are lyrics from a song titled “To Live Is Christ,” which is based on Philippians 1:21. The song is on the album “Risen” by Sovereign Grace Music.

Verse 1
Before You gave us life and breath
You numbered all our days
You set Your gracious love on us
And chose us to be saved
This fleeting life is passing by
With all its joys and pain
But we believe to live is Christ
And death is gain

Chorus
To live is Christ, to die is gain
In every age this truth remains
We will not fear, we’re unashamed
To live is Christ, to die is gain

Verse 2
And though we grieve for those we love
Who fall asleep in Christ
We know they’ll see the Savior’s face
And gaze into His eyes
So now we grieve, yet we don’t grieve
As those who have no hope
For just as Jesus rose again
He’ll raise His own

Verse 3
And now we’re longing for the day
We’ll see the Lamb once slain
Who saved a countless multitude
To glorify His name
We’re yearning for the wedding feast
Of Jesus and His bride
His nail-scarred hands will finally
Bring us to His side

Why is prayer necessary for Christians?

Heidelberg Catechism

~The Lord’s Prayer

Question 116. Why is prayer necessary for Christians?

Answer. Because it is the chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us,[1] and because God will give His grace and Holy Spirit only to those who earnestly and without ceasing ask them of Him, and render thanks unto Him for them.[2]

I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel

Daily Light Devotions - May 16 - Evening

I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel.

I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 1

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 2

I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength. 3

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 4

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 5

I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. 6

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. 7

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. 8

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold. 9

A man's steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way? 10

You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. 11

that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. 12

A servant of Jesus Christ

Daily Light Devotions - May 16 - Morning

A servant of Jesus Christ.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 1

You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 2

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 3

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." 4

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 5

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 6

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 7

So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. 8

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 9

Why then does God so strictly enjoin the Ten Commandments upon us, since in this life no one can keep them?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 115.
Why then does God so strictly enjoin the Ten Commandments upon us, since in this life no one can keep them?

Answer. First, that as long as we live we may learn more and more to know our sinful nature,[1] and so the more earnestly seek forgiveness of sins and righteousness in Christ;[2] second, that without ceasing we diligently ask God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, that we be renewed more and more after the image of God, until we attain the goal of perfection after this life.[3]

Raised up together ... in Christ Jesus

Daily Light Devotions - May 15 - Evening

Raised up together ... in Christ Jesus.

and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 1

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 2

Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 3

because we are members of his body. 4

And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 5

and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 6

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 7

For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." 8
