Jehovahshalom: The LORD send peace

Daily Light Devotions - April 1 - Evening

Jehovahshalom: The LORD send peace.

Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and called it, The LORD Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. 1

Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 2

The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 3

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 4

My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. And it will hail when the forest falls down, and the city will be utterly laid low. 5

For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 6

And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; 7

They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful." 8

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 9

The fruit of the Spirit is ... joy

Daily Light Devotions - April 1 - Morning

The fruit of the Spirit is ... joy.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 1

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 2

Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 3

as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 4

I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy. 5

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 6

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 7

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 8

For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. 9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 10

Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." 11

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. 12

For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." 13

What is it to be washed with the blood and Spirit of Christ?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 70. What is it to be washed with the blood and Spirit of Christ?

Answer. It is to have the forgiveness of sins from God through grace, for the sake of Christ’s blood, which He shed for us in His sacrifice on the cross;[1] and also to be renewed by the Holy Spirit and sanctified to be members of Christ, so that we may more and more die unto sin and lead holy and unblamable lives.[2]

What communion hath light with darkness

Daily Light Devotions - March 31 - Evening

What communion hath light with darkness.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 1

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 2

For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 3

But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 4

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 5

Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. 6

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 7

The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble. But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. 8

I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 9

for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 10

My God shall supply all your need

Daily Light Devotions - March 31 - Morning

My God shall supply all your need ...

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 1

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 2

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 3

So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours, and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's. 4

as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 5

A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 6

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. 7

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9

How is it signified and sealed to you in Holy Baptism that you have part in the one sacrifice of Christ on the cross?

Heidelberg Catechism

~Baptism

Question 69. How is it signified and sealed to you in Holy Baptism that you have part in the one sacrifice of Christ on the cross?

Answer. Thus: that Christ instituted this outward washing with water [1] and joined to it this promise, that I am washed with His blood and Spirit from the pollution of my soul, that is, from all my sins, as certainly as I am washed outwardly with water, whereby commonly the filthiness of the body is taken away.[2]

How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD?

Daily Light Devotions - March 30 - Evening

How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 1

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 2

But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me." "Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 3

Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you. 4

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 5

And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying out after us." 6

so that the tested genuineness of your faith--more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire--may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 7

Isaac went out to meditate

Daily Light Devotions - March 30 - Morning

Isaac went out to meditate ...

And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 1

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. 2

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 3

Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them. 4

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 5

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 6

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; 7

Riches are not for ever

Daily Light Devotions - March 29 - Evening

Riches are not for ever ...

for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? 1

Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! 2

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 4

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 5

as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 6

The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. 7

Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 8

Come, ye blessed of my Father ...

Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 1

"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 2

Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 3

and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 4

for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 5

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. 6

Are both the Word and the sacraments designed to direct our faith to the sacrifice of Christ on the cross as the only ground of our salvation?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 67. Are both the Word and the sacraments designed to direct our faith to the sacrifice of Christ on the cross as the only ground of our salvation?

Answer. Yes, truly, for the Holy Spirit teaches in the Gospel and assures us by the holy sacraments, that our whole salvation stands in the one sacrifice of Christ made for us on the cross.[1]

Our friend ... sleepeth

Daily Light Devotions - March 28 - Evening

Our friend ... sleepeth.

After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him." 1

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 2

For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 3

When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, and command them, saying, 'Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests' feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.'" then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever." 4

This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 5

Be strong and of a good courage.

Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous." 1

Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. 3

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 4

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 5

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 6

Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. 7

What are the sacraments?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 66.
What are the sacraments?

Answer. The sacraments are visible holy signs and seals appointed by God for this end, that by their use He may the more fully declare and seal to us the promise of the Gospel,[1] namely, that of free grace He grants us the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life for the sake of the one sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross.[2]

God is faithful

Daily Light Devotions - March 27 - Evening

God is faithful.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? 2

And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 3

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 4

Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. 5

which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. 6

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 7

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 8

To him that soweth righteousness

Daily Light Devotions - March 27 - Morning

To him that soweth righteousness ...

The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. 1

Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' 2

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 3

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 4

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you." 3

For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. 4

For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. 5

Question 63.
Do our good works merit nothing, even though it is God’s will to reward them in this life and in that which is to come?

Answer. The reward comes not of merit, but of grace.[1]

God hath called you unto his kingdom and glory

Daily Light Devotions - March 24 - Evening

God hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. 1

Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world." 2

waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 3

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever." 4

and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth." 5

Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 6

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. 7

"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 8

and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 9

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 10

Abraham believed in the LORD

Daily Light Devotions - March 24 - Morning

Abraham believed in the LORD ...

And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. 1

No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was "counted to him as righteousness." But the words "it was counted to him" were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 2

For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 3

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." 4

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 5

Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. 6

For nothing will be impossible with God." And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." 7

But why cannot our good works be the whole or part of our righteousness before God?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 62.
But why cannot our good works be the whole or part of our righteousness before God?

Answer. Because the righteousness which can stand before the judgment seat of God, must be perfect throughout and entirely conformable to the divine law,[1] but even our best works in this life are all imperfect and defiled with sin.[2]

Daily Light Devotions - March 23 - Evening

They constrained him, saying, Abide with us.

but they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. 1

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 2

Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock, where you make it lie down at noon; for why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions? 3

Scarcely had I passed them when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her who conceived me. 4

Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden, let its spices flow. Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits. 5

I came to my garden, my sister, my bride, I gathered my myrrh with my spice, I ate my honeycomb with my honey, I drank my wine with my milk. Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love! 6

I did not speak in secret, in a land of darkness; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, 'Seek me in vain.' I the LORD speak the truth; I declare what is right. 7

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty

Daily Light Devotions - March 23 - Morning

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.

And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" 1

Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 2

Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. 3

To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. 4

For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior. 5

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." 6

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 7

What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 8

"Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet? 9

Why do you say that you are righteous by faith only?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 61.
Why do you say that you are righteous by faith only?

Answer. Not that I am acceptable to God on account of the worthiness of my faith, but because only the satisfaction, righteousness and holiness of Christ is my righteousness before God;[1] and I can receive the same and make it my own in no other way than by faith only.[2]

If so be the Lord will be with me

Daily Light Devotions - March 22 - Evening

If so be the Lord will be with me ...

So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said." 1

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?" 2

With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. 3

And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. 4

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 5

And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor." And the LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?" 6

Lot lifted up his eyes

Daily Light Devotions - March 22 - Morning

Lot lifted up his eyes ...

And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other. 1

and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 2

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 3

Remember Lot's wife. 4

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 5

Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 6

How are you righteous before God?

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 60.
How are you righteous before God?

Answer. Only by true faith in Jesus Christ:[1] that is, although my conscience accuses me, that I have grievously sinned against all the commandments of God, and have never kept any of them,[2] and am still prone always to all evil;[3] yet God, without any merit of mine,[4] of mere grace,[5] grants and imputes to me the perfect satisfaction,[6] righteousness, and holiness of Christ,[7] as if I had never committed nor had any sins, and had myself accomplished all the
obedience which Christ has fulfilled for me;[8] if only I accept such benefit with a believing heart.[9]

Is his mercy clean gone for ever?

Daily Light Devotions - March 21 - Evening

Is his mercy clean gone for ever?

Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? 1

It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever; 2

'The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.' 3

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. 4

he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 6

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. 7

Be watchful, and strengthen ...

Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. 1

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 2

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 3

"Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children-- 4

but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. 5

And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." 6

fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, "Fear not, I am the one who helps you." 7

Noah was a just man

Daily Light Devotions - March 20 - Evening

Noah was a just man.

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 1

Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for "The righteous shall live by faith." 2

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 3

and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. 4

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 5

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it-- the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 6

More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 7

Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. 8

The entrance of thy words giveth light

Daily Light Devotions - March 20 - Morning

The entrance of thy words giveth light.

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. 1

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 2

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 4

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 5

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. 6

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 7

for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 8

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 9

Strengthen thou me according unto thy word

Daily Light Devotions - March 19 - Evening

Strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. 1

Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weary with looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety! 2

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 3

"And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed. 4

And he said, "O man greatly loved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage." And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, "Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me." 5

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, 6

Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts. 7

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 8

His name shall be in their foreheads.

They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 1

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 2

But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity." 3

The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. 4

saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads." 5

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. 6

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 7

The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 8

In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.' 9

Mine eyes fail with looking upward.

Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weary with looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety! 1

Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O LORD--how long? Turn, O LORD, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. 2

My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. And I say, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; 3

For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 4

And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." 5

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 6

waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 7

What do you believe concerning the “forgiveness of sins?”

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 56.
What do you believe concerning the “forgiveness of sins?”

Answer. That God, for the sake of Christ’s satisfaction,[1] will no more remember my sins, nor the sinful nature with which I have to struggle all my life long;[2] but graciously imputes to me the righteousness of Christ, that I may nevermore come into condemnation.[3]

In all points tempted like as we are

Daily Light Devotions - March 17 - Evening

In all points tempted like as we are ...

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 1

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 2

For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world. 3

And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For it is written, "'You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'" 4

For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world. 5

For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. 6

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 7

To make atonement for him

Daily Light Devotions - March 17 - Morning

... To make atonement for him.

He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. 1

knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 2

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 3

to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 4

you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 5

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 6

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. 7

What do you understand by the “communion of saints?”

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 55.
What do you understand by the “communion of saints?”

Answer. First, that believers, one and all, as members of the Lord Jesus Christ, are partakers with Him in all His treasures and gifts;[1] second, that each one must feel himself bound to use his gifts readily and cheerfully for the advantage and welfare of other members.[2]

I will sing with the spirit

Daily Light Devotions - March 16 - Evening

I will sing with the spirit ...

What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 1

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 2

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 3

My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. 4

Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! 5

And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, 6

What is your life?

What is your life?

yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 1

"My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away; they see no good. They go by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping on the prey. 2

You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. 3

"Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not. 4

What do you believe concerning the “holy catholic Church?”

Heidelberg Catechism

Question 54.
What do you believe concerning the “holy catholic Church?”

Answer. That out of the whole human race,[1] from the beginning to the end of the world,[2] the Son of God,[3] by His Spirit and Word,[4] gathers, defends, and preserves for Himself[5] unto everlasting life a chosen communion[6] in the unity of the true faith;[7] and that I am and forever shall remain a living member of this communion.[8]

The Lord made heaven and earth

Daily Light Devotions - March 15 - Evening

The Lord made heaven and earth ...

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 1

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. 3

Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust. 4

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. 5

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 6

Perfect through sufferings

Daily Light Devotions - March 15 - Morning

Perfect through sufferings.

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 1

Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me." And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." 2

And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 3

The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. 4

Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. 5

Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul. 6

He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 7

25 ways to pursue joy In Christ

From Mark Altrogge, one of my favorite song writers:

God promises his children joy, and many times he fills us with it without our asking. But at other times, especially when we go through trials, we must fight for it. Much of the battle lies in fighting to believe God’s word.

For some the battle for joy is much harder than others. Some must deal with their own tendencies to being downcast. Depression and hard, long, sad afflictions can make Jesus’ joy seem beyond reach. Yet God’s word says it’s his intent to give us his joy both in this life and especially in the next. So here are some ways to pursue joy in Christ:

1. Praise God for the cross: for his mercy and grace in saving you.
2. Thank him for all his spiritual benefits: forgiveness, adoption, the Word, spiritual gifts, the church.
3. Ask Jesus to fill you with his own joy (JN 15:11).
4. Thank him for his steadfast love that never ceases.
5. Thank God for your temporal blessings: your spouse, kids, health, sight, food, strength, home, computer and coffee.
6. Praise God for his attributes: his greatness, sovereignty, goodness, love, wisdom and power.
7. Praise Jesus for being a compassionate high priest who intercedes for you.
8. Thank him for all the specific good he is producing in you through trials: patience, perseverance, and faith.
9. Thank God for his past faithfulness.
10. Give to the kingdom.
11. Give to the poor.
12. Serve others (PHP 1:25).
13. Don’t dwell on whether you are joyful or not. Try to forget yourself.
14. Thank the Lord that he is making you like Christ.
15. Seek God’s presence in prayer (PS 16.11; PS 43.4).
16. Read the Word – it produces joy (PS 119.111; JE 15:16).
17. Thank God that he will never turn away from doing good to you (JE 32:40).
18. Ask others to pray for God to fill you with joy.
19. Ask the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit of joy in you.
20. Confess your sins to God and ask him to restore the joy of your salvation (PS 51:12).
21. Memorize God’s promises to give you joy and ask him to fulfill them (JN 16:24; RO 14:17; 15:13; PS 4:7; 30:5; 68:3; 97:11; 126:6).
22. Consider others who have it much worse than you.
23. Pray for others who are suffering.
24. Contemplate the joys of heaven and the world to come.
25. Read John Piper’s book, When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy.
