Our friend ... sleepeth

Daily Light Devotions - March 28 - Evening

Our friend ... sleepeth.

After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him." 1

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 2

For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 3

When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, and command them, saying, 'Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests' feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.'" then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever." 4

This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 5

not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 6
