Ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning
"I overthrew some of you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a brand plucked out of the burning; yet you did not return to me," declares the LORD. 1
The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: "Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?" 2
Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 3
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 4
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 5
Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 6
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 7
save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. 8
Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts. 9
who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 10
