Reproach hath broken my heart.
Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. 1
Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 2
Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 3
The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" 4
But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." 5
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner." 6
And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." 7
And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 8
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds." 9
It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 10
For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 11
If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 12
