So run, that ye may obtain

Daily Light Devotions - May 28 - Evening

So run, that ye may obtain.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 1

The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!" 2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. 4

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 5

So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 6

and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. 7

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 8

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 9
